Outdoor Activities in Johannesburg

In Johannesburg and its surrounds, there are numerous, fun-filled ways to spend a day. There are plenty of outdoor activities in Johannesburg.Below is just a list of a few things to do in Johannesburg.

• Horse back riding just 45 minutes away from central Johannesburg

• Archery less than an hour’s drive at a scenic shooting range

• Close formation flying in an L-39 combat jet, or taking part in an aerobatic display in a Pitts Special aircraft.

• Hang gliding with the birds could be more your thing, or why not try micro-lighting? All under an hour away from the city.  Read more about scenic flights in Johannesburg if soaring with the birds interests you.

Hire a Harley Davidson, or a late model BMW motorbike, and go for a ride!

• Quad-biking or mountain biking trails beckon, just 35 minutes south of Sandton.

• Skateboarding your thing? Get down with your skateboard to one of the best built skateparks in the world!

• Also just 40 minutes south of Sandton is South Africa’s largest resort where you can learn how to scuba dive, and get qualified- open up a whole new underwater world for yourself!

• Other water sports that just might have your name on- just outside of Benoni, hire a jetski and have an afternoon of pure fun- or how about trying your hand at river rafting on the Vaal or Crocodile Rivers?  Or if you have more than a day , try the 2 day kayaking adventure, along the Crocodile River,-they’ll teach you tricks that will surely impress your friends and family! More fun than you can imagine, and all fully guided, with professional instructors.

• Cable waterskiing is something new and exciting- go for the day, get wet, get wild! Still talking wet and wild, kiteboarding is one of the world’s fastest growing sport phenomenon, so take a course, become one of many  the thousands who are hooked on kiteboarding. Dragon Boat racing won’t get you as wet, but the fun and laughter as you teambuild with your workmates will surely be worth it !

• Fly-fishing is another sport to try as you pit your strength and intelligence against a spirited fish- one day tours, corporate events, including tuition, is just a phone call away.

• Learn how to sky-dive- freefall, tandem jumps, and static line courses are all on offer with a professional school- if you’re not sure that you would like it, go and try the  skydiving simulator at the sports Park.  Five hours of pure adventure, “foefie” slides, bridge-swinging, and abseiling, or if it’s just abseiling that entices you, free-hang down a 50m bridge, or abseil into a cave- all equipment supplied.. There are different sites to choose from if you want to experience bungee jumping-a 45m platform free fall, or at the original bungee site built in Gauteng, at 50m- free falling until the rope snaps you back up- the adrenalin rush makes it all worth while, and you’d want to do it again!

• Want to get out of the city limits? That’s ok- mountain biking, horse back riding, quad biking, archery, abseiling, chartered helicopter flights, Segway riding ( instructions given!)- all can be found close to, or inside Sun City resort, including an extreme 2km adventure slide. At Sun City Waterworld you can para-sail, jet-ski, tube, hire a pedal boat, go out on a complimentary cruise boat, water-ski, wake-board, or knee-board. Outside of the resort complex, there are hot-air balloon rides- about an hour of peaceful, but exhilarating floating, over the scenic landscape below.

Elephant back safaris in the Pilansburg National Park is the ideal way to game-view, or have lunch with the elephants, and get in touch with these gentle giants- the world’s largest land mammal. Canopy tours or hot-air ballooning, kloofing, abseiling,  mountaineering, caving, clay pigeon shooting, quad biking- all of this can be found in the Magaliesberg and Cradle of Humankind area, while  white water rafting, mountaineering, caving, game capturing adventures-going along with the vet and the crew, in the Kruger National Park- whether you’re in Benoni, or Hoedspruit,  your outdoor activities can be as wild or as peaceful as you need.
